33 Connection to Faith Through OCIA, the students moved step by step. It begins with the Rite of Acceptance, continuing through formation during Lent, and culminating in the Easter Vigil, where they received their sacraments. But what stands out most isn’t the structure, it’s the people and the connection to faith. Each student spoke about the impact of those who walked alongside them: Sponsors who served as faith role models, Mrs. Schott – one of their biggest supporters – as well as family members, teachers, mentors, and friends who offered encouragement. They also expressed that this decision was entirely their own; it was something they chose, not something they were told to do. Connection to Others At the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, as they stood among others within St. John Fisher University’s Hermance Family Chapel of St. Basil the Great, alongside Fr. George Smith, CSB, the significance of the moment was undeniable. Even moments of uncertainty became opportunities for connection. Surrounded by 21 others also celebrating their sacraments, they quickly found a sense of community. “We didn’t know anyone at first and many of them were much older than us,” Molly said, “but we prayed together outside before mass, and it brought us together.” “I was tearing up,” Reena recalled. “Watching others being baptized was an amazing thing to witness.” Only the Beginning Their journey didn’t end at the Easter Vigil. “This is just the beginning,” Reena said. “I don’t want to stop here, I want to continue to grow my faith. My purpose is to be a light for others in my everyday life. Even the smallest acts can make a difference.” For Molly, the experience brought a sense of renewal. “I feel proud of myself,” she said. “It’s a feeling I can’t quite put into words. I feel refreshed.” And for Gracie, “It makes me want to go to church more with my grandma and my sister.” Through Core Team, mentorship, Theology class, community service, and this shared experience, these students didn’t just learn about faith, they lived it. Together. “Core Team is so much more than a club,” Molly said. “It brings people together who normally wouldn’t connect.” And perhaps that’s what staying connected to Aquinas truly means. Not just remembering where you’ve been, but continuing to grow in who you are, supported by a community that walks with you. Together, the three students wanted to share this message with our AQ community, and to anyone considering taking the next step in their faith: “You are in control of your own faith. Connect with yourself, connect with God, and connect with those who lift you up.”
