19 ANDREW NGUYEN ’12 UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE AND SCHOOL: Yale University, B.S. Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology MED SCHOOL: Harvard Medical School, Class of 2026 MEDICAL SPECIALTY: Planning to pursue orthopaedic surgery WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN MEDICINE? From my military service, I realized that through a career in medicine, I could be more than just a bystander to suffering — I could be in the position to not only reduce unnecessary pain, but to also help those affected by conflict and trauma be restored to the fullness of life. In crossing from the path of a warrior to that of a healer, I hope to continue a life of service with the mission to improve the human condition and reduce unnecessary suffering in the world one person at a time. HOW DID AQUINAS HELP PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR CAREER? A significant portion of my early formative years were spent at Aquinas. Aquinas provided a learning environment and community for me that fostered personal development, introspection, and maturity at a young age. Most importantly, Aquinas provided me with certain role models and mentors that I learned invaluable lessons from. I am thankful for the particular connections and interactions I had while at Aquinas— I would not be who I am today without those blessings. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT BEING IN THE MEDICAL FIELD? Though still only a first-year medical student, I find it most rewarding to have the opportunity to dedicate myself to lifelong service to those around me. I am able to pursue what I find meaningful and commit myself to a cause much larger than myself. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 15 YEARS? In 15 years I hope to be doing what I find meaningful, to be a good father and husband, to give back to my family, and to provide mentorship to the next generation. WARREN CARTER ’16 UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE AND SCHOOL: Colgate University, double major in Molecular Biology and Russian and Eurasian Studies. MED SCHOOL: Yale School of Medicine, Class of 2025 MEDICAL SPECIALTY: Internal medicine or primary care WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN MEDICINE? In school, science interested me the most, especially learning about the human body. I thought that medicine would be a great way to help others and keep learning. Volunteering as an EMT in college solidified my desire to be a physician because it inspired me to learn more about how diseases work and exposed me to the feeling of helping people with their health. HOW DID AQUINAS HELP PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR CAREER? Aquinas had strong science programs that contributed to my interest in medicine. Being a student-athlete at Aquinas helped me learn time management and discipline that I continued in college. Aquinas also strongly emphasized the value of service in the curriculum. I experienced the unique satisfaction that comes with helping others and I knew that I wanted service to be central to my career. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT BEING IN THE MEDICAL FIELD? The most rewarding part of the medical field is feeling like you have positively impacted someone’s life. I enjoy that medicine is a collaborative, evolving field that will require lifelong learning and allows you to help people in an important way. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 15 YEARS? In 15 years I see myself as an attending physician, continuing to learn medicine to be of service to others while enjoying time with my family and friends.
